Context:
The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has deferred the proposal for grant of Environmental Clearance (EC) to the Stage-II of Uri-I Hydroelectric Project.
About the project
- Location: Uri 1 Hydroelectric Project is located on the Jhelum River of Uri town in the Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir.
- Commissioned: 1997.
- Installed capacity: 480 MW.
- Present status: Operational.
- Operated by: The power station is owned by the Central Government and the operating company of the plant is National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited.
Objective:
- To supply electricity to Northern Grid of India.
- To improve electricity supply in the Kashmir region.
- To obtain environmental benefits from displacement of alternative thermal power generation.
Power Grids of India
- Individual State grids were interconnected to form 5 regional grids covering mainland India.
- These grids were the Northern, Eastern, Western, North Eastern and Southern grids, established to enable the transmission of surplus electricity between States in each region of the country.
The northern power grid in India covers the following states:
Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chandigarh.
