Governance and Structure

An Under-Secretary-General heads UN DESA and advises the UN Secretary-General on the three pillars of sustainable development: social, economic, and environmental.

Since 2007, representatives from the People's Republic of China (PRC) continuously hold the leadership positions in the department.

The department operates as an active member of the United Nations Development Group.

UN DESA houses the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), which collects, processes, and disseminates statistical information, standardizes statistical methods, and implements programs like the Global Gender Statistics Programme.
