FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu presents the 2026 Agricola Medal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
PM Modi becomes the second Indian Prime Minister to win this prestigious prize, following Manmohan Singh, who received it in 2008.
The ceremony marks the first visit by an Indian Head of Government to the FAO headquarters in 30 years.
During the visit, the Prime Minister gifts the FAO Chief traditional Indian agricultural products, including indigenous rice varieties (like GI-tagged Palakkadan Matta, Gobindobhog, Basmati, Joha, and Kalanamak or 'Buddha Rice') and healthy millet bars.
The FAO praises India's food-based social safety net, which covers 800 million people.
It acknowledges India's direct income support initiatives that currently assist more than 110 million farmers.
The FAO recognizes PM Modi's leadership in prioritizing agrifood systems and rural development on the international agenda.
