• The Prime Minister inaugurated the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fibre Connection (KLI-SOFC) project in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep.
• The inauguration was part of various developmental projects totalling more than Rs 1,150 crore covering sectors such as technology, energy, water resources, healthcare, and education.
• The KLI-SOFC project is expected to lead to a significant increase in internet speed, providing new possibilities and opportunities for the people of Lakshadweep.
• The dedicated submarine optical fibre cable is described as ensuring a paradigm shift in communication infrastructure in Lakshadweep, enabling faster and more reliable internet services.
• Government Services and Digital Initiatives: The improved connectivity is expected to benefit various sectors, including telemedicine, e-governance, educational initiatives, digital banking, digital currency usage, and digital literacy.
• Funding and Project Execution: The project is funded by the Universal Services Obligation Fund (USOF), Department of Telecommunications. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) served as the Project Executing Agency, and the work was awarded to M/s NEC Corporation India Pvt Ltd through a Global Open Tendering process.
