What is Glacier Retreat? The term "glacier retreat" denotes the reduction in size and bulk of glaciers as a result of melting, evaporation, and other environmental factors.Between 1974 and 2021, the Yala glacier has experienced a 36% reduction in its total area. Effects of Global Warming The Hindu Kush Himalayan cryosphere is warming at a rate that is twice as rapid as the global average, resulting in the accelerated melting and retreat of glaciers in the area. |
- Glaciers and ice sheets store ~70% of global freshwater.
- Essential for ecosystems and human sustenance.
- Example: ~240 million people in Hindu Kush Himalaya depend on the cryosphere.
- Rapid glacier melt forms unstable glacial lakes.
- Risk of breaches leading to catastrophic floods.
- Melting glaciers reduce Earth's albedo (reflectivity).
- Increases heat absorption and accelerates global warming.
Initiatives to Protect Cryosphere |
Global Initiatives - UN: • 2025 declared as the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation. • March 21 to be celebrated as World Day for Glaciers annually. - Other Initiatives: • Himalayan Adaptation Network by IUCN • Living Himalayas Initiative by WWF |
India’s Initiatives - National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem - INCOIS: Monitors glacier-related events and issues GLOF alerts. - Polar Missions: Expeditions to Arctic & Antarctic (e.g., IndARC, 2014) |
