Context:

  • Days before he invaded Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin described Ukraine as a bogus country with no history, identity, or stable traditions of real statehood.
  • According to Putin, modern Ukraine was fully created by the Bolshevik, communist Russia.

Details:

  • About: Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest country by area in Europe after Russia.
  • Borders: Ukraine is bound by Russia to its northeast, east, and southeast, and the Black Sea in the south along the Sea of Azov along the coastline. In the southwest, west, and north, Ukraine shares borders, in the anticlockwise direction, with Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Belarus.
  • Capital: The nation's capital and largest city is Kyiv.
  • Rivers: The landscape of Ukraine is crossed by rivers such as the Dnieper (Dnipro), Seversky Donets, Dniester and the Southern Bug as they flow south into the Black Sea and the smaller Sea of Azov. To the southwest, the delta of the Danube forms the border with Romania.
  • Mountains: The country's only mountains are the Carpathian Mountains in the west and the Crimean Mountains on Crimea, in the extreme south along the coast.
  • Climate: Ukraine has a mostly continental climate. The climate is influenced by moderately warm, humid air coming from the Atlantic Ocean.
