Context
Recently, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake happened off the coast of Indonesia's Tanimbar Islands region.
About Tanimbar Island
- The Tanimbar Islands are located in the Indonesian province of Maluku, at the end of a long chain of islands that extends from Sumatra to Java, Bali, Lombok, and down to Timor.
- These islands are a group of around 30 islands located between the Banda and Arafura Seas.
- It is part of the Kei Archipelago and is under the Southeast Maluku Regency.
- Yamdena is the group's largest island, measuring approximately 70 miles in length and 40 miles in width at its widest point.
- The eastern shore of this island is covered with highly wooded hills, whilst the western coast is lower and generally swampy.
- Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly seismically active zone where various plates of the Earth's crust intersect, resulting in a great number of earthquakes and volcanic activity.
