For India to achieve Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047, logistics must be efficient, inclusive, and sustainable. How Does the Logistics Sector Cause Pollution? The logistics sector accounts for about 13.5% of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, mostly from burning oil-based fuels like diesel and petrol. Road Transport: Trucks and cars dominate logistics. About 70% of goods and 90% of passengers travel by road. Trucks alone cause 38% of the sector’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Roads are convenient but heavily polluting. Aviation: Domestic flights contribute around 4% of emissions. Planes use high-energy fuels, making them hard to decarbonize.
