The geographical significance of this terrain lies in the fact that it is flat and has access to road and rail lines, which provides strategic depth for operational manoeuvres.

Significance of Shakargarh Bulge

  • The protection of the Jammu–Pathankot axis was absolutely necessary for India in order to keep land connectivity with Jammu and Kashmir established.
  • Pakistan would have gained influence on the western front if it had been able to capture it since it would have prevented Indian soldiers from entering the Kashmir region.

A significant tank combat that took place in this region was one of the largest that took place after World War II.
