Context

A silent "Save Powai Lake" human chain planned by local people and nature enthusiasts was recently called off when the BMC sought a small "event fee" of Rs 11,000 to organize it along the lakefront.

About Powai Lake

Current Environmental Concerns

• Due to urban pressures, the lake has shrunk by more than 40% in recent years. 
• The lake's state has deteriorated as the surrounding residential, commercial, and industrial zones have grown rapidly. 
• The discharge of untreated sewage and solid debris, particularly from neighboring slums and residential areas, has had a significant influence on water quality. 

Inclusion According to the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP): 

• Powai Lake's deteriorating status was reviewed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F) in 1995 as part of the National Lake Conservation Plan. 
• As a result, Powai Lake was chosen as one of ten key lakes in India for restoration and environmental enhancement.
