Current Environmental Concerns

Due to urban pressures, the lake has shrunk by more than 40% in recent years.
The lake's state has deteriorated as the surrounding residential, commercial, and industrial zones have grown rapidly.
The discharge of untreated sewage and solid debris, particularly from neighboring slums and residential areas, has had a significant influence on water quality.

Inclusion According to the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP):

Powai Lake's deteriorating status was reviewed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F) in 1995 as part of the National Lake Conservation Plan.
As a result, Powai Lake was chosen as one of ten key lakes in India for restoration and environmental enhancement.
