The Polavaram Project is a multi-purpose irrigation project currently under construction on the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh's Eluru and East Godavari districts.  The Central Government of India designated the project as a National Project.

Spillway Capacity

Highest discharge capacity in the world — 50 lakh cusecs (surpassing China’s Three Gorges Dam)

World Record

Set a world record by pouring 32,315.5 cubic metres of concrete into the spillway channel in a single stretch

Polavaram Project Objectives

  • It is projected to develop a total irrigation potential of 436,825 acres
  • The project also plans to generate 960 MW of hydropower and provide drinking water to a population of 28.50 lakh in 611 communities.
  • The project also intends to transport 80 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water from the Godavari to the Krishna river basin.
  • The dam will assist in regulating floodwaters from the Godavari River, decreasing the risk to adjacent populations.
