NORTH EASTERN REGION DISTRICT SDG INDEX

NITI Aayog released the 2nd NER District SDG Index (2023-24), showing 85% districts improved. Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura are front-runners, with Hnahthial (Mizoram) as best performing. Developed with UNDP and MoDoNER, it's a vital tool for evidence-based planning and monitoring regional development towards 2030 SDGs.

Context:

The 2nd edition of the North Eastern Region (NER) District Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index Report (2023-24) was released by the NITI Aayog.

About NER District SDG Index

Objectives => To measure the performance of districts across eight North Eastern States on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Development => NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MoDoNER), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) collaboratively develop this index.

Significance => It acts as a vital tool for monitoring development progress at the district level, informing policy decisions, and identifying gaps to guide interventions and resource allocation.

Methodology and District Categorization

Framework => The Index adopts NITI Aayog's SDG India Index methodology.

District Categories => Districts are classified into four categories based on their composite scores:

  • Achiever: Score equals 100 (achieved targets).
  • Front Runner: Score between 65 and 99.
  • Performer: Score between 50 and 65.
  • Aspirant: Score less than 50.

Highlights of the 2023-24 Edition

Overall Improvement => 85% of the districts in the NER show an increase in their composite scores, indicating overall progress.

Front Runner Status => All districts in Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura achieve "Front Runner" status

Best Performing District => Hnahthial in Mizoram emerges as the best-performing district in the entire North Eastern Region, with a score of 81.43. Nagaland sees three of its districts into the top 10 performers.

Sectoral Improvements => "Good Health & Well-being" witnesses increased scores in 93 districts. All districts of Assam show improvement in indicators related to "Zero Hunger," "Quality Education," "Clean Water and Sanitation," and "Decent Work and Economic Growth."

Consistent Performance => Sikkim demonstrates the most consistent performance across all its districts.
