Context

  • Colombian authorities plan to evacuate people living within 15 kilometers of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which is being monitored for a possible eruption.

Details

  • Nevado del Ruiz is a volcano on the border of the departments of Caldas and Tolima in Colombia.
  • It is about 129 km west of the capital city Bogotá.
  • It is a stratovolcano composed of many layers of lava alternating with hardened volcanic ash and other pyroclastic rocks.
  • The volcano usually generates Vulcanian to Plinian eruptions, which produce swift-moving currents of hot gas and rock called pyroclastic flows.
  • The volcano is part of Los Nevados National Natural Park, which also contains several other volcanoes.
  • Nevado del Ruiz lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region that encircles the Pacific Ocean and contains some of the world's most active volcanoes.
  • It lies in the North Volcanic Zone of the Andean Volcanic Belt.

Note: The Andean Volcanic Belt is produced by the eastward subduction of the oceanic Nazca Plate beneath the South American continental plate.

  • The  Andean Mountain Range are the longest continental mountain range in the world, forming a continuous highland along the western edge of South America

  • The Andes Mountains are the highest mountain range outside Asia. The highest mountain outside Asia, Argentina's Mount Aconcagua, rises to an elevation of about 6,961 m above sea level.
