Context:

The Chhattisgarh High Court is closely monitoring development efforts at Madku Dweep, a location of important local importance.

Location:

Madku Island is located on the banks of the Shivnath River, the longest tributary of the Mahanadi River, in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district.

Mythological significance

  • It is said to be the meeting place of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
  • Harihara-Kshetra and Kedar Dweep are other names that refer to Shaivism and Vaishnavism, respectively.
  • Associated with Sage Mandukya, who is credited with writing the Mandukya Upanishad. 'Madku' is derived from 'Mandukya'.

Archaeological significance

  • In 2011, excavations revealed temple remains, sculptures, and inscriptions from the 11th-century Kalachuri period, including Brahmi and Shankhalipi scripts.
  • Contains 20 reconstructed temples with Shivling, Nandi, Ganesh, Radha-Krishna, and Vishnu statues.

Material culture

  • Stone Age implements were discovered nearby, indicating ancient human activity. Sandstone temple remains, idols, and architectural fragments are all visible.
  • Portrait sculptures of kings, donors, and acharyas with folded hands have been uncovered.
  • Significant temple with a 9th-century Shivling and Ganesh idol associated to Sage Mandukya's meditation location.

Cultural significance

  • Since 1909, the island has hosted the Masihi Mela, an annual Christian fair that celebrates the coexistence of Hindu and Christian cultures.
  • George E. Miller, an American missionary who observed life at the island's yearly fair, wrote the novel Prem Masih of Damoh, which features the place.

Protective Status: The Chhattisgarh government has declared it a state-protected archaeological site.
