About the Kerch Bridge

  • The Kerch Bridge, which spans the Kerch Strait, is 19 kilometers long and features two parallel rail and highways.
  • It was launched with great fanfare by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018, four years after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine via a contentious referendum.
  • It is also a symbol of Russian rule over Crimea, which was annexed in 2014.
  • It is symbolic for Russia since it allows direct link between the mainland and annexed Crimea.

Location

It is the only water body that connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov. It separates the Kerch Peninsula towards the west from the Taman Peninsula (Russia), lying in the east.

Significance of the Kerch Bridge for Russia

  • Establishing Connectivity: Following the takeover of Crimea in 2014, the bridge was built to create a "land bridge" between mainland Russia with Crimea.
  • Logistical Supply Link: The bridge is essential in providing logistical support to Russian soldiers in southern Ukraine.
  • Strategic Vulnerability: Because the bridge is still vulnerable to Ukrainian fire, Russia's military actions rely heavily on its security.
