Context

From July 2–9, the Prime Minister will travel to several countries to fortify India’s bilateral relations and international alliances. On this trip, he will stop in Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia.

About Ghana

Ghana, formally known as the Republic of Ghana, is a West African country.  It is bordered by the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, and Togo to the east. It is located on the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean in West Africa.

Historical significance of India-Ghana Relationship

  • India and Ghana have historical relations based on anticolonial solidarity and a common vision for the Global South.
  • India established a representative office in Accra in 1953, four years before Ghana's independence in 1957.
  • Diplomatic connections were formalized the same year, establishing the groundwork for a tight and friendly relationship.
  • Both states were founder members of the Non-Aligned Movement.
