During the monsoon season, this intermittent river runs across Pakistan and India. In the Thar Desert, the river is called Hakra after the Ottu barrage, and Ghaggar before the barrage. A Sutlej tributary, the Ghaggar existed before the Harappans.
Origin: Originating in the Shivalik Hills of Himachal Pradesh, the river travels through the states of Punjab and Haryana before entering Rajasthan. Its source is the village of Dagshai.
Tributaries: The Kaushalya, Markanda, Sarsuti, Tangri, and Chautang rivers are the primary waterways that flow into the Ghaggar.
The basin is divided into two parts: Khadir and Bangar. Bangars are higher banks that do not flood during the rainy season, whereas khadars are lower, flood-prone areas.
