What are the Falkland Islands?

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The archipelago, with an area of 12,000 km2, comprises East Falkland, West Falkland, and 776 smaller islands.

The islands are mostly mountainous and hilly, with the exception of the depressed plains of Lafonia (a peninsula in the southern part of East Falkland).
