Context

Beneath the stern exterior of the Falkland Islands, researchers have recently discovered a buried forest that thrived long before humans or sheep ever set foot on the islands.

What are the Falkland Islands?

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The archipelago, with an area of 12,000 km2, comprises East Falkland, West Falkland, and 776 smaller islands.

  • The islands are mostly mountainous and hilly, with the exception of the depressed plains of Lafonia (a peninsula in the southern part of East Falkland).
  • The Falklands are made up of continental crust fragments formed during the breakup of Gondwana and the opening of the South Atlantic.
  • Mount Usborne is the archipelago's highest point.  The climate on the islands is cold, windy, and humid maritime.  Strong westerly winds and cloudy skies are commonplace.
