- It is the trade and investment promotion organization for the engineering sector, sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
- It was established in 1955 and now has more than 12,000 members, with SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) accounting for 60% of the total.

- As an advisory body, it actively contributes to policy development for the Union Government, acting as the link between the engineering industry and the government.
- It organizes buyer-seller meetings (BSMs), overseas trade fairs/exhibitions, India pavilions/information booths at select international exhibitions, and supports the India Engineering Exhibition (INDEE).
- It organizes the India Engineering Sourcing Show (IESS) to highlight technology and connect global buyers and sellers.
- It publishes several reports/studies on international trends and opportunities.
