About Dorjilung Hydropower Project

  • Tata Power's investment in Bhutan's Dorjilung Hydropower Project reflects a growing private-sector engagement in cross-border renewable energy diplomacy.
  • The projected 1125-MW run-of-river project is located in Bhutan's eastern Lhuentse and Mongar Districts on the Kurichhu River, a tributary of the Drangmechhu that flows into India.
  • The concrete-gravity dam at a height of around 139.5 m conveys nearly 287 m3/s via a 15 km headrace tunnel to an underground powerhouse holding six Francis turbines, expected to generate around 4.5 TWh per year.
  • The project's entire cost is estimated at $1.7 billion. The World Bank finances the project.
  • Bhutan's Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) signed an MoU with Tata Power Company Limited in November 2024 to jointly build the project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) format, with DGPC owning a 60% interest and Tata Power holding 40%.
