Context

India has rejected "scare stories" made by Pakistan and others about China building dams upstream on the Brahmaputra River, particularly the massive 60,000-MW Medog Hydropower Project in Tibet.

About Brahmaputra River

  • The Brahmaputra River System is an important part of the Himalayan Drainage System, which is one of three major river basins in the region.
  • The Brahmaputra River and its various tributaries travel through the northeastern section of the Indian subcontinent, dramatically changing the landscape and supporting diverse ecosystems along the way.
  • The Brahmaputra is one of Asia's longest rivers, spanning 2,900 km and playing an important role in the hydrology and agriculture of the places it passes through.

Origin of the Brahmaputra River

  • The Brahmaputra (meaning "Son of Brahma") rises in the Chemayungdung glacier in southern Tibet.
  • Its source is extremely close to that of the Indus and Satluj.
  • Despite its extremely high elevation, the Tsangpo River has a gradual slope.
  • It runs slowly and has a large navigable channel for around 640 kilometres.

Major Tributaries:

Left Bank: Dibang, Lohit, Burhi Dihing, Dhansiri.

Right Bank: Subansiri, Manas, Teesta, Kameng.

States through which the Brahmaputra River Flows

In India, the Brahmaputra River flows through the states of:

  • Arunachal Pradesh,
  • Assam,
  • Meghalaya,
  • Nagaland,
  • West Bengal, and
  • Sikkim.
