About the Baitarani River

• It is a significant east-flowing river in eastern India, largely passing through Odisha and slightly through Jharkhand.
• Baitarani, together with rivers like Mahanadi and Brahmani, create a fertile delta.
• Baitarani originates from the Gonasika Hills in Keonjhar district, Odisha, about 900 meters above sea level.
• It originates beneath and travels through a little creek named Guptaganga before resurfacing, making the location sacred.
• The top part of the river flows north.
• Then it switches direction and flows eastward.
• The beginning of Baitarani serves as the border between Odisha and Jharkhand.
• It traverses over 360 km before discharging into the Bay of Bengal.

Major tributaries of the Baitarani River

• The river has 65 tributaries. Out of all the tributaries, 35 join from the left and 30 from the right.
• Salandi, Gahira, Kusei, Deo, Kanjhari, Musal, Arredi, Siri, Kukurkata, Budhi, Ambajhara, and Remal are some of the most important tributaries.
• The Baitarani basin has abundant mineral and agricultural resources, making it a suitable location for the development of a variety of industries.
