The Government of India now celebrates Ayurveda Day on September 23 every year, moving away from the variable Dhanteras date.
It is an annual event celebrated to spread awareness about Ayurveda , which is a traditional system of medicine rooted in Indian culture. It focuses on natural healing, balance, and wellness through lifestyle, diet, herbs, and therapies.
Until now, Ayurveda Day was celebrated on Dhanteras, a Hindu festival that comes before Diwali. However, Dhanteras falls on different dates each year because it follows the lunar (Hindu) calendar, usually between October and November.
The Government of India recently decided that Ayurveda Day will be celebrated every year on 23rd September.
The autumnal equinox, occurring on this date, symbolizes cosmic harmony—makes the date meaningful, as Ayurveda teaches living in sync with nature’s rhythms.
Fixing the date post-monsoon, when seasonal illnesses peak, offers a practical opportunity to promote immunity-focused Ayurvedic practices, such as herbal remedies and dietary adjustments.
September 23 carries no religious connection, making it inclusive for international audiences.
A stable date allows India to coordinate events with international partners, promoting Ayurveda’s recognition as a sustainable healthcare system. Hospitals and institutions can now plan health camps or awareness programs well in advance.
The Ministry of Ayush sees this change as a chance to integrate Ayurveda into modern health frameworks, emphasizing its role in preventive care and wellness.
