The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA)  suspended the membership of the National Zoological Park or Delhi zoo, over concerns about the poor handling of African elephants.

About

WAZA is the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquariums, dedicated to the care and conservation of animals and their habitats around the world. 

Establishement 

It was founded  under the name International Union of Directors of Zoological Gardens (IUDZG) in 1935 at Basel, Switzerland.

In 1991 the IUDZG adopted a new name, World Zoo Organization.

In 2000 the organisation got its current name, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, to reflect a more modern institution working together at a global level.

Membership

The membership consists of nearly 400 leading zoos, aquariums, national and regional associations around the world.

Working of WAZA

All members of the WAZA network are obliged to comply with "WAZA's Code of Ethics and Animal Welfare", adopted by WAZA in 2003.


WAZA promotes cooperation between leading zoos, aquariums, national and regional associations, as well as with leading wildlife experts, academies, and universities. 


WAZA provides support for species-conservation management and husbandry of animals in human care, while encouraging the highest standards in member institutions.
