Thousands of Albanian citizens launched the "Flamingo Revolution" to protest the government’s approval of a luxury resort project on the protected Vjosa-Narta delta.

What is the Flamingo Revolution?

The movement represents a youth-led, civil society-driven resistance against the unregulated, elite-focused exploitation of ecologically sensitive zones in Albania.

Symbolism: Protesters utilize inflatable Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) to symbolize the vulnerability of the Vjosa-Narta wetland, which faces destruction from luxury construction.

Objectives: Protesters demand the resignation of the Prime Minister, the repeal of the Strategic Investments Law, an immediate halt to construction in protected areas, and the protection of national biodiversity.

  • Lake Ohrid: One of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes, famous for endemic species (shared with North Macedonia).
  • Lake Prespa: Shared with North Macedonia and Greece.
