PRIME MINISTER VISITS AFSLUITDIJK DAM

The Afsluitdijk is a 32-kilometre Dutch causeway built between 1927 and 1932. It dams the Zuiderzee bay, converting it into the freshwater IJsselmeer lake. This mega-structure provides vital flood protection and connects North Holland with Friesland provinces.

Description

Why In The News?

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured the iconic Afsluitdijk dam in the Netherlands during his official visit to Europe.

About Afsluitdijk Dam

The Afsluitdijk is a 32-kilometre-long dam and causeway located in the Netherlands.

Built between 1927 and 1932 to separate the Zuiderzee (a saltwater inlet of the North Sea) from inland waters.

The dam transforms the enclosed saltwater bay into the IJsselmeer, a freshwater lake.

It connects North Holland and Friesland, providing afour-lane highway connection and having a complex system of shipping locks and discharge sluices.

Significance of the Dam

Global Benchmark for Flood Control: The dam serves as a world-renowned model for flood protection and land reclamation.

Freshwater Security: It protects large regions of the Netherlands from North Sea storm surges while enabling freshwater storage.

Climate Adaptation: Engineers evaluate and raise the height of the crest to adapt to climate change and ensure the dam withstands extreme design storms.

Blueprint for India's Kalpasar Project: The Afsluitdijk inspires Gujarat's proposed Kalpasar Project

  • India plans to build a similar dam across the Gulf of Khambhat to trap freshwater from seven rivers, provide irrigation to the Saurashtra region, and generate tidal, wind, and solar power.
