Context

The Ministry of Culture informed Parliament that the Government has documented the cultural heritage of over 4.7 lakh villages under the ‘Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar’ (MGMD) initiative.

"Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar" (MGMD)

It was launched by the Ministry of Culture in June 2023, as part of the National Mission on Cultural Mapping (NMCM)

It is implemented through the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Ministry of Culture. 

Core Objective

  • To create a comprehensive cultural map of 6.5 lakh villages. 
  • Documenting traditional arts, crafts, and artisans.
  • Recording local music, dances, festivals, rituals and theatrical forms.
  • Documenting local stories, legends, and knowledge passed down verbally.
  • Noting any historical monuments, sites, or stories.
  • Preserving local customs, food habits, attire, and rituals.

No financial assistance has been allocated to states for the implementation of this initiative.

Documented villages can be promoted as a hub of cultural tourism, which could boost rural economies, and generate employment.
