Context:

The Department of Posts has introduced ‘Gyan Post’, a dedicated postal service for affordable delivery of educational, cultural, social and religious books.

About Gyan Post

The primary aim of Gyan Post is to make printed educational materials more accessible and affordable for individuals across the nation, with a special focus on remote and rural areas.

Key Features

Gyan Post offers a highly subsidized rate for the delivery of books. The minimum charge is ₹20 for packets weighing up to 300 grams, with a maximum charge of ₹100 for packets up to 5 kilograms, exclusive of taxes.

The service is operational through all departmental post offices across India, utilizing the vast postal network to reach the remote corners of the country.

To ensure transparency and reliability, all parcels sent under Gyan Post are trackable. Optional add-ons like Proof of Delivery and Insurance are also available.

To maintain low costs, the delivery of 'Gyan Post' parcels is carried out through surface transport, such as road or rail.

Eligibility and Conditions

The service is exclusively for non-commercial printed educational, social, religious, or cultural content. Materials from recognized educational boards, universities, and statutory institutions are eligible.

Exclusions => Periodicals, magazines, commercial publications, and materials containing advertisements are not permitted under this service.

Inspection => Parcels must be marked as "Gyan Post" and are subject to inspection by postal officials to ensure compliance with the guidelines.

Significance

Inclusive Education => Gyan Post directly contributes to the goal of inclusive education by removing the barrier of high delivery costs for educational resources. This is particularly beneficial for students in economically weaker sections and those in geographically isolated areas.

Alignment with NEP => The initiative is a practical implementation of the New Education Policy's focus on equitable access to quality education for all.

Boosting the Knowledge Economy => Affordable access to a wide range of books—educational, cultural, and social—can promote a reading culture and contribute to the development of a knowledge-based society.
