News in Detail

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology launched ‘Bharat Gen’ on June 2, 2025, at the "BharatGen Summit" in New Delhi. The summit is India’s largest event focused on Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs).

What is BharatGen?

BharatGen is India’s first indigenously developed, government-funded Multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) designed specifically for Indian languages.

It supports 22 Indian languages, integrating text, speech, and image processing. This makes it a multimodal AI, meaning it handles multiple types of data to provide solutions as per diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.

It operates under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), led by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. A consortium of top institutions, including IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Mandi, and IIM Indore, collaborates on this project, with support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Applications & Impact Areas

Empowers Key Sectors => BharatGen delivers region-specific AI solutions for healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance. For example, in healthcare, it powers telemedicine services where an AI doctor communicates in a patient’s native language, building trust and improving care in remote villages.

Promotes Linguistic Diversity => India has diverse languages, BharatGen trains on India-centric datasets to understand these languages, unlike global AI models that depend on English-heavy data. This ensures data sovereignty, giving India control over its digital narrative.

Promote Inclusion => By supporting 22 Indian languages, BharatGen makes AI accessible to every citizen, bridging the digital divide. It integrates with platforms like the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), enable multilingual feedback for better governance.

Drives Self-Reliance => BharatGen aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by reducing dependence on foreign AI technologies. It strengthens India’s domestic AI ecosystem, benefiting startups, industries, and government agencies.

Encourages Innovation => The project’s open-source platform allows researchers, startups, and innovators to build AI applications affordably. The Generative AI Hackathon 2025, launched at the summit, engages students to solve real-world problems using BharatGen.
