Context:

As the COP16 biodiversity conference approaches, only 10 percent of nations have met their pledges to protect biodiversity, raising significant concerns.

National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)

They are the set of a decisive roadmap agreed at the UN's Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022 to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

It was developed by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF).

This framework requires all 196 participating countries to revise their NBSAPs to align with these ambitious goals.

Countries committed to do so by the upcoming UN Biodiversity Summit in October 2024.

NBSAPs are crucial blueprints for countries to outline their strategies to tackle biodiversity loss and meet international targets.

They align with the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

Aims of NBSAPs

These plans are aimed at ensuring that nations can mobilise action and funding to help restore ecosystems and safeguard wildlife.

The NBSAP Tracker aims to make biodiversity policies accessible to all stakeholders, ensuring transparency and accountability as countries prepare for COP16.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)

It was adopted during the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) in 2022 following a four-year consultation and negotiation process.

It supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and builds on the Convention’s previous Strategic Plans.

It sets out an ambitious pathway to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050.

Among the Framework’s key elements are 4 goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030.
