Project Chetak, one of the oldest and most strategic projects of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), recently celebrated the 47th Raising Day at Bikaner (Rajasthan).

What is Project Chetak?

Established in 1980, Project Chetak is a dedicated wing of the BRO tasked with constructing and maintaining strategic roads and military infrastructure in the Western Sector.

Motto: "Chetak ka Prayas, Desh ka Vikas" .
Headquarters: Bikaner, Rajasthan.
Area of Operation: It covers the sensitive border states of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Northern Gujarat.

Key Mandates & Achievements

It maintains a network of over 4,000 km of roads. These serve as the "feeder roads" that connect the hinterland to the International Border (IB), facilitating rapid troop mobilization during conflicts.
A unique feature of this project is the maintenance of approximately 214 km of Ditch-Cum-Bund works.

A DCB is a military obstacle system involving a water-filled ditch and a high earthen bund, designed to slow down enemy tank advances while providing cover for friendly forces.

The project is currently upgrading key border roads to National Highway Double Lane (NHDL) specifications to handle heavy military equipment like T-90 tanks and Pinaka rocket launchers.

Strategic Significance

Defense Preparedness: Specialized paved roads ensure all-weather connectivity and mobility for heavy artillery in the desert terrain of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Socio-Economic Spillover: These roads have integrated remote border villages (often called the "last villages") with mainstream economic hubs, facilitating trade and access to healthcare.

Flood Control: The maintenance of bunds also assists in local flood management during the monsoon, protecting border villages.
