The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched the "Sanchar Mitra Scheme" to Empower Youth as Digital Ambassadors.
It is a nationwide program to empower young people, especially college students, to become "digital ambassadors" or "Sanchar Mitras". These students volunteer their time to help regular people understand important things about mobile phones and the internet.
Students from specific academic backgrounds in universities are nominated to become Sanchar Mitras. These include students studying:
Local DoT offices work with educational institutions to identify and select suitable students for the program.
Empower Youth => It provides young people a chance to contribute to nation-building and become leaders in their communities.
Boost Digital Literacy => It helps common citizens understand how to use digital technologies properly and safely. This includes teaching them about online manners and being responsible with their mobile phones.
Bridge the Gap => It connects citizens with the government's efforts in telecom services, to ensure that information and benefits reach everyone.
Improve Cyber Safety => A major aim is to protect people from online dangers, reduce digital fraud, and spread awareness about cybersecurity.
Raise Awareness => They teach people about important telecom issues like how to stay safe online (digital safety), how to prevent cyber fraud (like phishing emails or scam calls), and what "EMF radiation" is and why it's generally safe (Electromagnetic Field radiation from mobile towers and phones).
Promote Responsible Use => They encourage everyone to use their mobile phones and the internet in a smart and safe way.
Conduct Outreach => They organize awareness campaigns at the local level, talk to community groups, and work with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). They act like guides, helping people make smarter digital choices.
