• Recently in February 2025, India and the US announced some plans to procure & co produce Javelin anti-tank guided missiles.
• This happened after discussions between PM Narendra Modi & US President Donald Trump. And It's aim is to fulfill India’s defense needs.

About the Javelin Missile:

• FGM 148 Javelin is a highly advanced & American made anti tank guided missile.
• It is Man-Portable, This means it can be used by soldiers on the grounds.
• There is one good feature as well. And that is Missile guides itself to the target, after its launch.
• It also enables the operator to take cover & avoid counterfire.

Key Features of Javelin Missile:

• There is a reusable unit which operates the missile system. It works with a disposable launch tube.
• It was used in 5,000 engagements in conflicts such as Afghanistan & Iraq.
• It can be deployed from multiple platforms & it also can be used in all weather conditions,anytime day & night.
• It was Developed to defeat known & projected enemy armours.

Significance for India:

• The purchase and co-production of Javelin missiles will increase India's defense capabilities in anti-tank warfare.
• This defense technology Cooperation is aimed to strengthen strategic relations between the both countries.

Were there any other discussions on Areas of Cooperation between India and the USA ?

Yes, there were discussions on other areas of cooperation as well.

• 10-Year Defense Framework will be signed in 2025 this year. It will be focusing on Indo Pacific security.
• S. Defense Equipment covers C-130J, C-17, P-8I, Chinooks, Seahawks, Harpoon missiles, Javelin missiles, MQ-9B drones, & F-35 jets.
• Defense Co Production will expand joint production of Javelin missiles &Stryker vehicles.
• India’s status as a major defense partner will increase corporations including ITAR review.
• There will be joint exercises in all domains. It will include the largest tri service exercise Tiger Triumph.
