Context

The Indian Naval Submarine (INS) Shalki arrived at the port of Colombo for a two-day formal visit.

 Details

• The last Indian submarine to call at Colombo was INS Karanj, which arrived on February 3 on the eve of Sri Lanka's 76th anniversary of independence.
• In June last year, INS Vagir made a port call at Colombo.

INS Shalki

• Class & Type:Shishumar-class diesel-electric submarine.
• Commissioning Date:February 7, 1992.
• Status:Active service as of 2024.
• Builders:Mazagon Dock Limited in collaboration with German firm HDW.

Operational History

• INS Shalki, launched in 1987 and commissioned in 1992, holds the distinction of being India's first indigenously built submarine.
• It has been actively involved in various naval exercises and missions, contributing to India's maritime security.

INS Karanj (S23)

• Class & Type: Kalvari-class submarine (Scorpène-class)
• Commissioned: 10 March 2021
• Builder: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai in collaboration with Naval Group, France
• Role: Diesel-electric attack submarine designed for a range of missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.
