Context:

The Erasmus+ Programme awarded scholarships to 101 Indian students.

What is the Erasmus+ Programme?

It is an initiative of the European Union to support international academic mobility.

It was started in 1987, to provide opportunities for education, training, youth activities, and sports across Europe and its partner countries.

Recently, 101 Indian students received the Erasmus+ scholarship for master’s programs in Europe. Among them, 50 were women. 

What does the Erasmus+ scholarship offer to students?

The Erasmus+ scholarship allows students to study at two or more European universities. Through this, they can earn joint, double, or multiple degrees. The scholarship covers tuition fees, travel costs, and living expenses, making international education accessible.

It supports a wide range of individuals and organizations:

• Young people, students, and adults: It supports them in education, training, traineeships, or volunteering abroad, helping them expand their skills and competence.
• Educational institutions and organizations: It offers them opportunities for European cooperation with their international partners.
• Teachers, researchers, and policymakers: It provides grants and supports teaching, research, networking, and policy debates on EU topics.
• Sports organizations: Its sports chapter promotes grassroots activities in sports, encouraging participation and inclusion.

What are the main objectives of the Erasmus+ programme?

• It supports people’s educational, professional, and personal development in the fields of education, training, youth, and sport in Europe and partner countries.
• It promotes growth, employment, social cohesion, and innovation within Europe.
• It strengthens European identity and encourages active citizenship.

Who manages the Erasmus+ programme?

• The European Commission, which is the EU’s executive body.
• The Education, Audiovisual, and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
• A series of National Agencies in "Program countries" (EU member states and certain other European countries).
• A series of National Offices in some partner countries (countries outside the EU that participate in the program).
