What is APEDA?

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) operates as an apex export-promotion body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Legal Basis: The Government of India establishes the authority under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act, 1985.

Core Mission: APEDA builds international trade channels and drives global market expansion for India’s agricultural sector.

Objectives of APEDA

Export Promotion: The authority maximizes India’s agricultural export potential by developing export-oriented downstream agro-processing industries.

Value Addition: APEDA replaces low-value raw exports with high-value processed goods, such as the 22.6 metric tonnes of spray-dried whole egg powder exported by OVO Farm Pvt. Ltd. to Austria.

Market Development: It opens premium international markets for regional crops, exemplified by the successful dispatch of fresh mangoes from Jharkhand to the United Kingdom.

Quality Standards: APEDA enforces international food safety rules and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures, ensuring compliance with European Union hygiene requirements and Export Inspection Council (EIC) standards.

Fruits and Vegetables: APEDA monitors the export lifecycle of fresh produce, leveraging India’s status as the world’s largest producer of mangoes.
