India and Germany celebrate 25 years of strategic partnership.

Background

The India and Germany Strategic Partnership was established in 2000, has evolved into one of the most significant bilateral relationships globally, built on four fundamental pillars: Peace, Prosperity, People, and Planet.

May 2025 marks the Silver Jubilee of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, representing 25 years of deepening cooperation across multiple sectors including defense, technology, trade, education, and sustainable development.

Four Pillars of Partnership

Peace

  • Shared Vision: Both nations advocate for a peaceful, stable, and rules-based world order.
  • Key Mechanism: Intergovernmental Government Consultations format.
  • Defense Cooperation: Joint military exercises including Tarang Shakti Exercise (2024) and German Navy port calls in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prosperity

  • Economic Integration: Bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 33.33 billion in 2023, making Germany India’s largest trading partner in Europe. Germany is also the 9th largest foreign investor in India, with USD 14.5 billion invested from 2000 to 2023. Around 2,000 German companies create 750,000+ jobs in India.
  • Infrastructure: Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail operated by Deutsche Bahn showcases technological collaboration.
  • Future Prospects: Both countries are working toward a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, which could boost trade further.
  • Science & Technology: They also collaborate on science and technology, with Indian researchers working in top German institutes like the Max Planck Society.

People

  • Educational Exchange: 50,000+ Indians studying in Germany (largest foreign student group).
  • Career Pathways: The Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement signed in 2022 makes it easier for Indians to study, work, and research in Germany.
  • Language Learning: Growing interest in German language across India.
  • Cultural Integration: Indians adapting and thriving in German society.

Climate Change

  • GSDP Initiative: Indo-German Green and Sustainable Development Partnership launched in 2022. They collaborate on climate-resilient agriculture and forest restoration, ensuring sustainable growth.
  • Financial Commitment: Germany pledged €10 billion in loans and grants over 10 years to support projects like solar and wind energy, biodiversity, and smart cities.
  • Green Hydrogen: Both countries also work on green hydrogen, a clean fuel, through the Indo-German Green Hydrogen Task Force.
  • Fighting Climate Change: Germany supports India-led initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

Both countries plan to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and defense manufacturing. Germany’s Focus on India strategy and India’s Viksit Bharat vision (developed India by 2047) align for a stronger future.
