Context

The Union Culture and Tourism Minister recently unveiled the renovated Sheesh Mahal, a Mughal-era palace in Shalimar Bagh, North Delhi.

What is Sheesh Mahal?

Sheesh Mahal is a beautiful 17th-century palace, built during Emperor Shah Jahan's reign, that exemplifies skilful Mughal architecture. The structure is an integral feature of the huge Mughal garden complex.

Construction of Sheesh Mahal

  • Sheesh Mahal was initially constructed using bricks and red sandstone.
  • It was designed to be a duplicate of Shalimar Bagh in Kashmir, which was built by Emperor Jahangir in 1619.
  • Outside of the Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb complexes in Delhi, it remains untouched.
  • The garden and water channels mimic paradise, providing both calm and a display of power over nature.

Recent developments

  • The palace and its surrounding gardens are now protected monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India.
  • ASI began restoration work on palace heritage elements, including a Mughal-style Char-Bagh landscape rebuilt by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to restore its former beauty.
