Context:

The Sambhal district court ordered a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid as demanded by a petition which led to an eruption of violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

Background of the controversy:

The petition was filed with the claim that the 16th-century Jama Masjid was built on the plot of the ancient Hari Har mandir.

Based on the petition, the Smbhal district court has ordered a photographic and video graphic survey.

However, it was the second time when the survey again held and this led to an eruption of violence.

Similar claims were made in the case of the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and Eidgah Masjid Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and Kamal-Maula Masjid in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh.

About Jama Masjid:

The Jama Masjid is an important example of the Mughal architecture.

It was built during the reign of Mughal emperor Babur by Mir Hindu Beg around 1528

The Jama Masjid “is a protected monument”, notified on December 22, 1920 under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act, 1904. It has been “declared as Monument of National importance and figures on the website of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the list of centrally protected monuments.

Materials used in the construction: stone masonry and plaster.

Features: a large square mihrab hall with a dome, flanked by arches.

According to the Hindu beliefs, it is the place where the tenth incarnation of lord Vishnu i.e., Kalki will take birth. This makes the issue a religious one and more controversial.
