Context

The Madhya Pradesh government commemorated 19th-century tribal legend Raja Bhabhut Singh by renaming the Pachmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary in his honour.

Who is Raja Bhabhut Singh?

  • Raja Bhabhut Singh was born into the Jagirdar dynasty of Harrakot Raikheri, descended from Thakur Ajit Singh ji, the owner of Pachmarhi Jagir.
  • His grandfather, Thakur Mohan Singh, fought alongside Peshwa Appa Saheb Bhonsle of Nagpur against the British in 1819-20.
  • He was a major monarch of the Gond tribe, ruling over Jabalpur and the Satpura hills.
  • During the 1857 revolt, Raja Bhabhut Singh launched effective guerrilla raids against the British using his extensive knowledge of the Satpura jungles and mountain trails.
  • He was a close ally of the independence fighter Tatya Tope.
  • Raja Bhabhut Singh's guerrilla warfare tactics in the Satpura mountains displayed a clever tactical strategy that kept the British at bay until 1860, when they sent in the Madras Infantry expressly to capture him.
  • Bhabhut Singh, also known as Shivaji of Narmadachal, is known for his guerilla warfare tactics.
  • He is remembered as a martyr in Korku folk customs after being executed by the British.
