Context

After years of back and forth between the Karnataka government and the center, there is finally some movement toward the development of Chamundi Hills through the central government's Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) project.

What is the PRASHAD Scheme?

  • The Ministry of Tourism created the 'National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive' (PRASAD) in 2014-15 to promote holistic development of recognized pilgrimage places.
  • The scheme's name was modified from PRASAD to "National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)" in October 2017.
  • After the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development ended the HRIDAY project, it incorporated the development of heritage destinations into the PRASAD scheme, which was then renamed PRASHAD.
  • Several religious cities/sites have been identified for development under the PRASHAD Scheme, including Amaravati and Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, Kamakhya in Assam, Parasuram Kund in Lohit District, Arunachal Pradesh, Patna and Gaya in Bihar, and so on.
  • The State/Union Territory Government will implement the projects identified under this initiative through the identified agencies.

Funding Mechanism

  • The Central Government provides 100% funding for project components via public funding.
  • This initiative aims to use the voluntary money available for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to increase the sustainability of the projects under it.
