About Maratha Military Landscapes of India

  • This magnificent network of twelve forts, dating from the 17th to 19th century CE, exemplifies the Maratha Empire's strategic military vision and architectural brilliance.
  • These 12 forts are situated across the states of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu and include Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, as well as Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu.
  • The Archaeological Survey of India protects Shivneri, Lohgad, Raigad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, and Gingee forts, while the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra protects Salher, Rajgad, Khanderi, and Pratapgarh forts.

Historical and geographical Significance

  • The selected locations in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, and Gingee Fort in the latter.

Criteria for Recognizing World Heritage Sites

  • Sites must have extraordinary universal importance and meet at least one of ten selection criteria to be considered for the World Heritage List.

  • ICOMOS and the IUCN conduct an independent evaluation of the nominated site.
