The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has submitted a 'Letter of Intent' to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2036.

Details

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey have all expressed an interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, the final decision will come after the IOC elections next year.

India’s Proposal

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) sent a 'Letter of Intent' to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to express India's interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics.

Ahmedabad has emerged as a strong candidate due to its infrastructure and ability to host a major international event.  

India has proposed including yoga and other regional sports such as kabaddi, cricket (Twenty20 format), chess, squash, and kho kho, in accordance with the IOC's rule that allows host countries to propose locally popular sports for their edition of the Games.

About Indian Olympic Association (IOA) 

It was established in 1927, it selects athletes to represent India in international athletic competitions such as the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. 

 Its funding comes from the Indian government, state governments, and various state sports federations.

It recognizes 38 national sports federations, divided into two categories: Olympic Sports and Other Recognized Sports.

It has hosted a number of multi-sport events, including the 1951 and 1982 Asian Games, the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and the South Asian Games.

T. Usha is the Indian Olympic Association's President from 2022 to 2026. 

International Olympic Committee (IOC)

It was founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin and Demetrios Vikelas.

It is the international, non-governmental governing body in charge of organizing the Summer, Winter, and Youth Olympics, as well as supervising the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and directing the global Olympic Movement, which includes all Olympic-related organizations.

Originally, the Summer and Winter Olympics took place in the same year. Since 1992, the IOC has moved the Winter Olympics to alternate years with the Summer Games.

The headquarters is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

  • The process is managed by two Future Host Commissions, one for the Summer Games and another for the Winter Games. 

Criteria

  • The IOC examines the nation's infrastructure, sustainability, economic impact, and cultural relevance, they consider funding strategies, the city's ability to host the Games, transportation, and accommodation capacity.

Process

  • A nation interested in hosting submit a "Letter of Intent" to express their interest. If the IOC is satisfied with a nation's initial plans and capabilities, it invites the country to engage in a targeted dialogue to present a comprehensive plan to the IOC.   

IOC Role

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) works closely with potential host countries and their National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to ensure that every aspect of the proposed Games is thoroughly researched and in line with IOC objectives.
