Why in the News?

The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) released the World Happiness Report 2026, which evaluates the state of global happiness.

What are the Key Highlights of the Report?

The World Happiness Report 2026 is published in partnership with the Gallup World Poll, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Top ten countries in the World Happiness Report 2026

  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Denmark
  • Costa Rica
  • Sweden
  • Norway
  • Netherlands
  • Israel
  • Luxembourg
  • Switzerland

Nordic Dominance: Northern European nations like Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway continue to occupy the top positions, highlighting the success of their social welfare models.

Latin American Outlier: Costa Rica achieved a remarkable 4th position, the highest-ever ranking for a Latin American country.

India's Position: India’s rank improved slightly to 116th from 118th in 2025. However, this position highlights challenges in translating economic growth into life satisfaction.

The Conflict Penalty: Nations impacted by severe geopolitical conflict rank the lowest. Afghanistan is last (147th), preceded by Sierra Leone, Malawi, and Zimbabwe.

Decline of Anglosphere Nations: For the second year in a row, no major English-speaking country made it to the top 10. The USA ranked 23rd, Canada 25th, and Britain 29th, due to falling happiness levels among their youth.

The Six Pillars of Happiness Evaluation

The report's rankings are based on public self-assessment of life satisfaction, analyzed against six key variables.

Pillar

Description

GDP per capita

Measures the average economic prosperity of a country's citizens.

Social Support

The ability to count on friends or relatives in times of trouble.

Healthy Life Expectancy

The average number of years a person can expect to live in good health.

Freedom to Make Life Choices

The perceived freedom to choose one's own path in life.

Generosity

The prevalence of pro-social behavior and charitable donations within a society.

Perceptions of Corruption

The perceived level of corruption in government and business.

Social Media's Impact on Youth Well-being

The 2026 report establishes a clear negative link between excessive social media consumption and youth mental health.

  • The Threshold of Harm: It found that 15-year-old girls using social media for 5 or more hours daily reported a significant drop in life satisfaction. Interestingly, those using it for less than one hour daily reported the highest well-being.
  • Mechanisms of Distress: Algorithmic scrolling promotes FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), cyberbullying, and body dysmorphia. It replaces real-world community interaction with digital isolation.

Conclusion

The World Happiness Report 2026 identifies Finland as the world's happiest country for the ninth consecutive year, while highlighting a significant global decline in youth well-being attributed to heavy social media use.
