Osbeckia zubeengargiana: New Plant Species Discovered in Assam

Botanists from Gauhati University discovered a new plant species, Osbeckia zubeengargiana, in the grasslands of Manas National Park, Assam. Named after legendary singer Zubeen Garg, this perennial shrub features pinkish-purple flowers and reaches heights of 3.5 metres.

Gauhati University researchers discovered a new flowering plant, Osbeckia zubeengargiana, in Assam’s Manas National Park, naming it in honour of the Assamese singer and conservationist Zubeen Garg.

About Osbeckia zubeengargiana

Scientific Name: Osbeckia zubeengargiana Barnali Das & N. Nath.

Common Name: Locally referred to as "Mon Jai" (meaning "I feel like" or "the heart desires"), a nod to one of Zubeen Garg's most famous songs.

Family: Melastomataceae.

Location: Found exclusively in the moist grassland ecosystems of Manas National Park in Assam's Baksa district.

Conservation Status: Currently classified as Data Deficient (DD) by researchers, as it has only been recorded in its type locality so far. 

Botanical & Morphological Details

Growth Habit: A perennial, erect shrub reaching heights of 2.5 to 3.5 metres.

Flower: Produces clusters of delicate pink to purple tetramerous flowers (four petals) that are roughly 2.5–3 cm in length.

Leaves: Features linear-lanceolate leaves with three prominent nerves and a cuneate base.

Floral Unique Traits: Distinguished by a pubescent (hairy) style base, specific hypanthium morphology, and significantly larger seed size (0.7–0.8 mm) compared to related species.

Bloom Cycle: The plant flowers and bears fruit between mid-September and January
