STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF THE BOSPHORUS STRAIT AND BLACK SEA

The Bosphorus Strait is a 30-km natural waterway in Turkey connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It serves as the vital maritime boundary between Europe and Asia, acting as a strategic global choke point for trade.

Description

Why In News?

A Russian oil tanker was hit by a sea drone near the Bosphorus Strait, disrupting Black Sea grain and oil traffic

About Bosphorus Strait

Geographic Profile

  • Location: Located in northwestern Turkey, it divides the city of Istanbul between two continents: Europe (Thrace) and Asia (Anatolia).
  • Connectivity: It connects the Black Sea (North) to the Sea of Marmara (South).
    • Note: From the Sea of Marmara, ships pass through the Dardanelles Strait to reach the Aegean Sea and finally the Mediterranean.
  • Physical Features: It is the world's narrowest strait used for international navigation (width ranges from 700m to 3.7km).

Strategic Importance

  • The Only Exit: For Black Sea nations (Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Romania, Bulgaria), the Bosphorus is the only maritime exit to the world oceans.
  • Energy Corridor: Millions of barrels of Russian and Caspian Sea oil pass through here daily to reach global markets, including India.
  • The "Montreux" Gatekeeper: Under the 1936 Montreux Convention, Turkey has sovereignty over the strait.
    • Peace Time: Free passage for merchant vessels.
    • War Time: Turkey can block warships of belligerent nations (as it has done for Russia since 2022), but cannot block merchant ships unless Turkey itself is at war.

About Black Sea

Geographic Profile (Mnemonic: BURGRT)

The Black Sea is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by 6 countries

  1. Bulgaria (West)
  2. Ukraine (North)
  3. Russia (Northeast)
  4. Georgia (East)
  5. Romania (West)
  6. Turkey (South)

Connected Seas:

  • Sea of Azov: Connected via the Kerch Strait (North of Black Sea).
  • Sea of Marmara: Connected via the Bosphorus Strait (South of Black Sea).

Unique Physical Features

Anoxic Basin: The Black Sea is the world’s largest body of water with a meromictic basin. This means the deep waters (below 200m) do not mix with the upper layers.

  • As a result, the deep water is anoxic (zero oxygen), preserving ancient shipwrecks perfectly but supporting no marine life.

River Drainage: Major rivers like the Danube, Dnieper, and Don drain into it, making the surface water less saline than the Mediterranean.

Economic & Geopolitical Significance

"Breadbasket Route": It is the primary export route for Ukrainian and Russian grain (wheat, corn, barley). Blockades here directly cause food inflation in Africa and Asia.

Energy Hub: Critical for the TurkStream and Blue Stream gas pipelines carrying Russian gas to Turkey and Southern Europe.

Warm Water Access: For Russia, the Black Sea (specifically the port of Sevastopol in Crimea) is its only major "warm water port" available year-round (unlike its frozen northern ports), making it vital for naval power projection.

PRACTICE QUESTION

Q. Consider the following pairs regarding the Black Sea region:

1. Kerch Strait: Connects Black Sea and Sea of Azov.

2. Bosphorus Strait: Connects Black Sea and Aegean Sea.

3. Crimean Peninsula: Located in the northern Black Sea.

Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?

A) 1 only

B) 1 and 3 only

C) 2 and 3 only

D) 1, 2, and 3

Answer: B

Explanation:

Pair 1 is Correct: The Kerch Strait is a narrow passage that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov (the shallowest sea in the world) to its north.

Pair 2 is Incorrect: The Bosphorus Strait connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It does not connect directly to the Aegean Sea. To reach the Aegean, a vessel must pass through the Sea of Marmara and then the Dardanelles Strait.

Pair 3 is Correct: The Crimean Peninsula is a major landmass extending into the northern part of the Black Sea, bordered by the Sea of Azov to its northeast.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The Bosphorus is a natural, narrow strait located in northwestern Turkey that serves as an international shipping lane. It is world-renowned for separating the European and Asian continents, splitting the city of Istanbul into two, making it the only city in the world on two continents.

The Black Sea is a large, nearly landlocked inland sea situated between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is technically a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean, connected via the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea, and the Sea of Marmara. It is famous for being the world's largest meromictic basin, meaning its deep waters do not mix with the upper layers.

The sea receives significant freshwater inflow from major rivers, including the Danube (second longest in Europe), Dnieper, Dniester, Don, and Kuban.
