Context

• Indian multi-role stealth frigate INS Shivalik has reached Pearl Harbour in Hawaii to take part in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, which is world's largest naval exercise
• INS Shivalik sailed into Pearl Harbour on Thursday on completion of JIMEX 24, a bilateral exercise between India and Japan.

Overview

 Nature: World's largest international maritime exercise

• Location: Hawaii
• Duration: Until August 1, 2024
• Theme: Partners: Integrated and Prepared
• Leadership: Led by the US Navy
• Participants: Approximately 29 countries

Objectives

• Enhance interoperability among navies of friendly foreign countries
• Build trust among participating navies
• Ensure the safety of sea lanes and security of the world's oceans

Phases of the Exercise

1.Harbour Phase (27 June to 07 July 2024)

• Activities include:

• Multiple symposiums
• Exercise planning discussions
• Sports competitions
• Reciprocal deck visits

• Sea Phase
• Divided into three sub-phases
• Involves both basic and advanced level integration exercises
