Context: The Prime Minister of India inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi.

Highlights of the Event

  • During the programme, the Prime Minister awarded medals to the recipients of the President's Police Medal for Outstanding Service and the Gold Medal for the Best Investigative Officers of the CBI.
  • The Prime Minister inaugurated newly built CBI office buildings in Shillong, Pune, and Nagpur.
  • He issued a postage stamp and a commemorative coin to commemorate CBI's Diamond Jubilee year, and he also inaugurated the CBI Twitter handle.
  • He also issued an update to the CBI Administration Handbook, an Almanac on Bank Frauds - Case Studies and Learning, In Pursuit of Justice - Supreme Court Judgements in CBI Cases, and a guidebook on International Police Cooperation for the sharing of foreign located intelligence and evidence.

Statement 1 is correct: The establishment of the CBI was recommended by the Santhanam Committee on Prevention of Corruption (1962–1964).

Statement 2 is correct: The CBI is the main investigating agency of the Central Government. It plays an important role in the prevention of corruption and maintaining integrity in administration. It also assists the Central Vigilance Commission and Lokpal.

Statement 3 is incorrect: The CBI investigates crimes of corruption, economic offences and serious and organized crime other than terrorism.
