Context: The Madras Music Academy executive committee unanimously decided to present the Sangita Kalanidhi award 2023 to Bombay Jayashri and Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari.

Sangita Kalanidhi Award

  • The Sangita Kalanidhi Award is considered the most prestigious honour in Carnatic music. The Madras Music Academy conferred the honour.
    • Carnatic music is commonly linked with southern India, especially the state of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. But it is also popular in Sri Lanka.
  • Bombay Jayashri (Carnatic singer) has been selected for the Music Academy's Sangita Kalanidhi award in
    • She is a trained dancer, a veena player, and an expert in Hindustani music.
    • She is honoured with a Padma Shri for her lyrical and meditative singing style.
    • She has been teaching music to underprivileged kids and promoting social causes through her art.
  • Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari will be awarded the Nritiya Kalanidhi dancing award. She is an expert in both Bharathanatyam and Kuchipudi.
    • "Bharatanatyam" has its roots in Tamil Nadu. It reflects South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideals, primarily those of Shaivism and generally of Hinduism.
    • Kuchipudi originates from Andhra Pradesh. It is a dance-drama performance that has its origins in the Natya Shastra, an old Hindu Sanskrit scripture.
