  • The Netherlands is to close production at Groningen gas fields by October due to the potential risk of earthquake.
    • The Netherlands for decades was one of Europe's main gas suppliers through the Groningen field until they decided to cut production to limit the seismic risks.
  • The Groningen gas field is a natural gas field in Groningen province in the northeastern part of the Netherlands.
    • It is the largest natural gas field in Europe.
    • Revenue from natural gas production was an important source for the country.
  • Since 1991 the area is experiencing continuous earthquakes. This led to damage to houses and unrest among residents.
    • Therefore, It was decided to phase out gas extraction from 2014 onwards.
    • The Groningen gas field is expected to be closed between 2025 and 2028.
